Ham Yard Hotel is nestled away in the middle of Soho and is one of my favourite places to pop in to and escape the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist filled streets surrounding it. Up until the end of last year their beautiful roof terrace was only open to hotel guests, but that all changed with their winter Sipsmith rooftop pop up, and their current Vermouth on the Roof pop up that's taking place til Sunday 4th September.
Vermouth on the Roof is a chance to experience this stunning roof terrace, where you can relax in the sunshine surrounded by their rooftop gardens, which are the inspiration behind each of the cocktails on offer, and munch on nibbles specially designed to compliment the aperitif drinks. Tickets are priced at £15 per person for a two hour slot, a welcome drink of Ham Yard Spritz, made with Contratto Aperitif, prosecco and Fever Tree soda, and nibbles. Sessions start at 5pm and 7.30pm Tuesday to Friday, and 2pm, 4.30pm and 7pm at weekends.
We tried out a few of the drinks on offer including the "Salty Rogue" which was my absolute favourite - Regal Rose Bianco, fluffy pink grapefruit juice and yellow Chartreuse granita, which came served on the side for me to spoon over the drink. It was tangy and bitter and sharp and so refreshing. Julie's "Punching Above" went down pretty well too - a blend of Fernet Branca, Contratto Bitter, Antica Formula, lemon, lemongrass sugar and homemade grapefruit soda. Equally as refreshing and almost as tasty as my Salty Rogue.
We nibbled on the all veggie snacks including arancini, mushroom bruscetta, skewers of mozzarella and tomato and feta wrapped in courgette slices.
After a wander round the gardens we moved to a more sunny spot and had another drink each. Much sweeter this time round, and though I don't normally go for sweet cocktails, these rounded off our evening on the rooftop nicely. I had the "Professor" - Vermouth del Professore classico, Montelocco and homemade date cordial, topped with a whole date. Julie had "A Rose by Any Other Name" - Regal Rogue Rose with Fever Tree tonic, served with a side of Italian meringue and wild strawberry coulis. The perfect end to another wonderful evening at Ham Yard!
