SENOR CEVICHE, SOHO

Senor Ceviche is my kind of place for a fun night out with a girlfriend or three. It's in the perfect location for some post-shopping or pre-partying in Soho, it's fun, lively, they play great music, serve excellent cocktails and even better food that's made for sharing. I popped down with Bron a couple of weeks ago after being invited to review it and we made a pretty good dent on both the cocktail and food menu. There's something for everyone and you can have as much or as little as you like.

The food at Senor Ceviche is based around Peruvian BBQ and ceviche dishes and there's a good mix of the two on the menu. We started off with the "clasico" and the "senor ceviche" ceviches. Both are sea bream ceviche with aji limo tiger's milk, red onion, sweet potato puree and coriander, then the "senor ceviche" also has avocado, octopus and tempura baby squid. I love ceviche anyway but these were both excellent versions of it, with the tangy, fiery tiger's milk perfectly complementing the balance of fish and vegetables.

On the less healthy but equally delicious side of things were chicharrone de calamari - tempura baby squid with pickled jalapeno mayo, and chifa chicharrones - slow cooked, crispy pork belly with sweet soy sauce. The squid was cooked so well, totally soft to the bite under the crunchy coating. And the pork was sticky, melt in the mouth goodness, though maybe a little on the sweet side for me.

Quinoa, black bean and cheddar croquettes were unlike anything I've tried before, with the quinoa adding such a nice texture that you just don't get from breadcrumbs.

Super pollo - marinated and grilled chicken thigh with aji rocotto and piquillo pepper salsa was juicy and tender. As was the papaya marinated flat iron steak with uchucuta sauce, which I think is a Peruvian version of chimichurri, and was a lovely mix of fresh green herbs and pickly vinegar.

Drinks for the evening came in the form of various (and many) cocktails. Excellent pisco sours, the mancora surfclub - a mix of machu picso, elderflower, cucumber and apple juice, and our favourite, the mamacita, made with tequila, triple sec, lime juice, agave and fresh aji. Senor Ceviche is affordable, lots of fun and the food and drinks live up to the hype. Can't wait to go back!
